Women's Soccer Powers to 4-1 Win

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team earned a 4-1 victory over Pine Manor College on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Mitchell (2-0-0 overall) got goals from four different players and held a commanding 23-5 advantage in shots. The Mariners went up 4-0 before Pine Manor (0-1-0 overall) got on the scoreboard with eight minutes remaining in the contest.

Freshman Caley McClendon scored in the sixth minute to get things going for Mitchell. She shot from a tough angle on the right end line and found the side netting for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

Sophomore Rebecca Tabak found the scoring column in the 34th minute. She one-timed a loose ball at the top of the box and placed it just over the leap of goalkeeper Colleen Tencza. The goal, the first of Tabak's career, gave the Mariners a 2-0 lead heading into the halftime intermission.

Senior Marjorie Oliveira and junior Brittany O'Neil followed suit in the second half, each recording the first goals of their careers. Oliveira, a newcomer on the squad, scored in the 64th minute on a left-footed attempt from the left side of the box. O'Neil found the back of the net in the 72nd minute after stealing an opposing throw-in and scoring from the right side.

Pine Manor's lone goal came in the 82nd minute off the foot of Margaret Roberts. She stole the ball away in her own offensive third and fired a shot over the Mitchell keeper that slid just under the crossbar. The goal was her first of the season.

Tencza finished with nine saves in the defeat. Freshman Kaylee Woodford made two stops in goal for the Mariners and earned her second victory of the season.

Mitchell will next play at Rhode Island College on Saturday, September 11 at 1 p.m.
