Lombardo's Goal Lifts Women's Soccer at Regis

WESTON, Mass. - Mitchell College freshman Maariyah Lombardo scored with 15 seconds left in double overtime to propel the women's soccer team past Regis College by a 2-1 final in NECC action on Saturday afternoon.

The Mariners improved to 4-2-0 overall on the season and 2-0-0 in the NECC. The Pride, newcomers to the conference this season, dropped to 6-3-0 overall and 2-1-0 in NECC play.

The Pride got on the board first in the 11th minute when Michelle Sirois fed a top box pass to Adena Joseph to make the score 1-0 in favor of Regis.

The Mariners would power back in the 26th minute with a barrage of shots on Pride goalkeeper Michaela Yebba. Yebba sprawled out to make a point blank save on Madeline Crow, who cranked a hard shot towards the lower right post. Crow controlled the rebound and rifled a second shot into the back of the net for her fourth score of the year.

Crow's goal tied the score at 1-1. Both teams would try to convert in the final minutes of the first half but neither team could turn a solid shot on goal.

The second half opened with a long stretch of uneventful volleys between both squads with neither team finding the back of the net. The Pride had one last attempt in the final minute of play when Kristen Abreu lobbed a strong kick wide of the Mariners goal, but regulation ended with the score tied at 1-1.

After a scoreless first overtime, the Pride had an opportunity in the second extra period when Abreu cut through the Mariners backfield to go one-on-one with goalkeeper Kaylee Woodford. Woodford stonewalled the shot to keep the score at 1-1.

The Mariners continued to hustle in the final two minutes of play, making a successful attack with 15 seconds left in the contest. Lombardo cranked a hefty shot off the rebound from Yebba's save to score the game winner and give the Mariners the 2-1 victory. It was the fourth goal of the season for the reigning NECC Rookie of the Week, who has scored a goal in each of the last four contests.

Mitchell returns to action on Tuesday, October 4 at Elms College. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
