Women's Soccer Blanked by Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard scored three first half goals en route to its first win of the 2012 season, defeating Mitchell College by a 4-0 final on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Jill Kelly scored a goal and added a pair of assists to lead the Bears, who improved to 1-3-0 overall. Coast Guard dominated play throughout and held a 23-1 advantage on shots and 7-0 in corner kicks. Mitchell dropped to 0-2-0 overall on the season.

Coast Guard wasted little time finding the back of the net, earning a corner kick in the seventh minute to set up its first scoring chance. Kelly served up the corner to the far post where Hanna Jansson headed it home for the game winner.

Mitchell recovered from the early goal and nearly equalized minutes later. Senior Amanda Hernandez slipped past the defense and rolled a shot along the ground that kicked off the post.

The Mariners hung around until Coast Guard pulled away behind a pair of goals in the final five minutes of the first half. Kelly played a part in each, finishing off a pass from Sarah Hills in the 41st minute and feeding Sheila Dutt for a score in the 44th minute.

The Bears continued to pressure in the second half and kept the Mariners pinned in their own defensive end. Coast Guard's lone tally in the second half came in the 53rd minute when Holly Moore finished off a pass from Liz Runci.

Devin Fellman wasn't tested while recording the shutout in goal for the Bears. Freshman Diamond Thomas played the first half for the Mariners and had one save while junior Kaylee Woodford made seven saves in the final 45 minutes.

Mitchell will next host Albertus Magnus College on Monday, September 17 at 4 p.m. Coast Guard returns to action at home against Wellesley College on Saturday, September 15 at 2:30 p.m.
