Albertus Magnus Tops Women's Soccer 5-2

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team dropped a non-conference match to Albertus Magnus College by a 5-2 final on Monday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Shannon Skidmore scored a pair of goals, including the game winner in the opening minutes of the second half, to lead the Falcons (5-1-1 overall). Albertus Magnus controlled the pace of play and outshot Mitchell 35-8 while earning a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

Freshman Alexandra Mahar and sophomore Alexandra Charles each netted their first career goals to lead the Mariners (0-3-0 overall). Junior Kaylee Woodford made a season-high 14 stops in goal.

Amanda Roke put Albertus Magnus in front in the ninth minute when she chipped a shot over Woodford and into the back of the goal. The Falcons struck again in the 21st minute when Danielle Figueroa scored on an unassisted effort to make it 2-0.

Mitchell got one back in the 29th minute when Mahar scored off a pretty give-and-go with freshman Jessica Balducci. The two worked in tandem up the right sideline before Mahar laced a shot inside the far post to cut the deficit to one.

Albertus Magnus led 2-1 at the half but wasted little time extending the lead. The Falcons earned a corner kick in the 47th minute and capitalized when Kelly Marchitto fed a ball to the front of the goal that Skidmore headed home. Skidmore then repeated the feat in the 67th minute, this time with Sarah DiCenzo serving up the corner kick. Skidmore's two goals increased her season total to four through seven games.

The Falcons added their final goal in the 68th minute when a Mitchell foul in its defensive end yielded a penalty kick. Marchitto stepped up and buried a ball into the right corner to put Albertus Magnus on top 5-1.

The game's final score came in the 77th minute when Charles and AMC goalkeeper Christina Dineson raced for a loose ball. Charles beat her to the ball and slipped a shot into the open net for her first of the season.

Dineson played all but the final 7:20 and finished with two saves. Maria Chase replaced Dineson and recorded a save in the final minutes.

Mitchell will next host Daniel Webster College on Saturday, September 22 at noon.
