Women's Soccer Earns First Win

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team earned its first victory of the 2012 season by a 7-0 final against Daniel Webster College in the New England Collegiate Conference opener for each squad on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Sophomore Alexandra Charles and senior Lauren Fritsch each scored a pair of goals to lead the Mariners (1-3-0 overall, 1-0-0 NECC). Charles also tallied an assist on the game-winning goal scored by sophomore Madeline Crow early in the contest.

Mitchell's defense held the Eagles without a shot in the match. Starting DWC goalkeeper Ema Donlagic made three saves in just over 32 minutes while Alexis Pavelock closed out the game and had six stops.

Crow put the Mariners on the scoreboard in the 14th minute by finishing off a cross by Charles, volleying it out of mid-air and into the goal for her first of the season. Charles then added her first tally of the day in the 25th minute to close out the first-half scoring.

Four players accounted for Mitchell's five goals in the second half. Charles buried her second of the game in the 58th minute, and sophomore Breanna Poirier and freshman Katie McBride chipped in with their first goals of the year in the 76th and 83rd minutes, respectively. Fritsch closed out the scoring with a pair of goals in the game's final three minutes.

Mitchell goalkeepers Kaylee Woodford and Diamond Thomas each played a half to combine for the shutout.

Mitchell will next play at UMass-Dartmouth on Wednesday, September 26 at 3:30 p.m.
