Coast Guard Shuts Out Women's Soccer


NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Coast Guard women's soccer team notched a 5-0 victory over Mitchell College in the first game of the 2013 Conn. College/CGA Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

With the victory Coast Guard moved back to .500 on the season at 2-2-0, while the loss dropped Mitchell to 0-2-0 on the year.

Coast Guard outshot Mitchell 28-0 in the contest and four different players tallied goals for the Bears. Caroline Eastman scored twice to pace Coast Guard. Freshman Shirley Palmer recorded 12 saves for Mitchell in the contest.

Coast Guard struck first in the 28th minute when Sarah Hills broke free and buried a 16-yard blast from the middle of the box into the back of the net. The Bears doubled their lead in the 32nd minute when Hanna Jansson delivered a long lead pass down the right sideline and Eastman beat Palmer from the right side of the box to make it a 2-0 contest.

Less than a minute later, Madison Ahlers tacked on another goal for Coast Guard. The Bears added two more goals in the opening half, courtesy of Eastman again and Caitlin Piker as Coast Guard closed out the 5-0 win.

Holly Moore worked the entire game in goal to pick up the shutout victory - her first of the season - for Coast Guard.

Mitchell will next host New England College on Wednesday, September 11 at 1 p.m.
