Rhode Island College Tops WSoccer

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Rhode Island College scored six goals in the first half en route to an 8-0 victory over Mitchell College on Saturday afternoon in women's soccer action at Alumni Field.

Danielle Peloquin scored two goals and added two assists to lead the Anchorwomen (2-1-1 overall). Gabrielle Turner chipped in with a pair of goals and an assist while Lauren Maisano, Sam Nolte and Harmony Tillison also added markers.

Turner scored each of her goals in the opening 16 minutes of the contest, both off feeds from Peloquin. Her first tally came in the 11th minute when she took a pass, turned up field and fired a shot from the left side into the right corner of the goal. In the 16th minute, Peloquin stripped a Mitchell defender of the ball and sent a pass to Turner, who drilled a shot off the right post and into the back of the net.

Later in the half, the Anchorwomen added a flurry of goals over a six-minute span. Rhode Island went up 3-0 on an own goal in the 21st minute after a shot by Jaclyn Greenman was headed into the goal by a Mitchell defender on a clear attempt. Greenman then assisted on Maisano's goal in the 24th minute to make it a four-goal game. Finally, Peloquin added scores 50 seconds apart in the 26th minute on nearly identical plays. Both times she took passes – the first from Turner and the second from Chelsea Combs – and dribbled around the keeper for open net looks.

Rhode Island led 6-0 at the break and tacked on a pair of goals in the final seven minutes of the contest. Nolte's goal came off a corner kick by Greenman that found her open near the far post. Tillison capped the scoring in the 88th minute after winning a ball from a defender and dribbling in for a one-on-one attempt against the keeper.

Rhode Island held a 32-5 advantage in shots for the contest and a 17-2 edge in corner kicks. Audrey Maia made four saves in goal for the Anchorwomen while Mitchell starter Shirley Palmer made nine and Kaylee Woodford recorded four in the second half.

Mitchell (0-4-0 overall) returns to action at Daniel Webster College on Saturday, September 21 at 3 p.m.
