WSoccer Tops Wheelock 5-0

BOSTON – The Mitchell College women's soccer team continued its postseason push with a 5-0 victory at Wheelock College on Wednesday afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference match-up.

Freshman Sophie Spiller scored two goals and senior goalkeeper Kaylee Woodford made nine saves as the Mariners (3-10 overall, 3-5 NECC) picked up their second straight win. Sophomores Samantha Cilenti, Alexandra Mahar and Katie McBride also added goals on the day as Mitchell remained in the hunt for a spot in the upcoming NECC Championship.

Spiller netted her first career goal in the 18th minute off a feed from sophomore Taylor Silva, burying a shot into the lower right corner on a breakaway. Less than two minutes later, Cilenti added her first tally of the season to make it 2-0. She lifted a shot from 25 yards that snuck under the crossbar.

Nearly six minutes after her first goal, Spiller was at it again in the 24th minute when she followed up a rebound off her own shot and cleaned it up for a 3-0 Mitchell lead. Mahar later added her fourth marker of the season just minutes before the halftime intermission to give the Mariners a comfortable 4-0 lead at the break.

Neither side scored in the second half until the final minute of regulation, when freshman Taylor Kadlec fed McBride for her fourth goal of the season. The five goals marked a season high for the Mariners.

Woodford recorded her second clean sheet of the season while Wheelock goalkeeper Meghan Lewis finished with 14 stops.

Mitchell will wrap up the regular season with a home game against Bay Path College on Saturday, October 26 at 1 p.m.
