Women's Soccer Picks Up First Win vs. Daniel Webster


NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season by a 6-2 final over Daniel Webster College on Saturday afternoon in the New England Collegiate Conference opener for each squad.

Freshman Elisa Johnson netted her first career hat trick to lead the Mariners (1-6-0 overall, 1-0-0 NECC). Katie McBride, Madeline Crow and Samantha Cilenti also added markers for Mitchell, and Taylor Saja contributed a pair of assists.

The Eagles (1-5-0 overall, 0-1-0 NECC) were led by Theresa Soy, who recorded a pair of goals on the day.

Johnson put the Mariners ahead in the third minute of the contest, scoring from the right side on a shot just inside the near post. The Mariners added a second goal in the 37th minute when Johnson drew a penalty in the box and Mitchell was awarded a penalty kick. Cilenti did the honors and deposited her first goal of the season to give the home team a 2-1 lead heading into the halftime intermission.

Crow's goal came in the 51st minute off a feed from Saja, extending the Mitchell lead to 3-1. Johnson then added her second of the game in the 65th minute thanks to an assist by McBride. Moments later, McBride secured her first goal of the season after a combination of passes from Saja and Sophie Spiller left her with a clean look from inside the 18.

Johnson notched the hat trick in the final seconds of regulation, firing a shot from outside of 30 yards that beat the keeper with just one second remaining. She leads the Mariners with four goals on the season.

Soy's goals came in separate halves but on similar plays. Each time, Alexis Pavelock served a corner kick into the box that Soy put away into the back of the net. Soy leads the Eagles with four goals on the season while Pavelock increased her team-leading assists total to four.

Mitchell held a 41-7 edge in shots for the game. Amanda Dargee and Shannon Grigas combined to make 14 saves in goal for the Eagles while the Mitchell duo of McBride and Shirley Palmer made one.

Mitchell will next play at Becker College on Saturday, October 4 at 11 a.m. Daniel Webster returns to action at home against Southern Vermont College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
