Strong Start Not Enough for WSoccer at RIC

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Mitchell College women's soccer team squandered an early lead in a 5-2 loss to Rhode Island College on Wednesday afternoon at the RIC Soccer Field.

RIC's Gabrielle Turner erupted for four goals and one assist as the Anchorwomen overcame a two-goal deficit and snapped a nine-game losing streak.

Mitchell (1-7-1 overall) opened the scoring in the third minute when senior midfielder Madeline Crow took a cross and kicked it home to give the Mariners the 1-0 lead. They doubled their lead in the 12th minute when senior Taylor Silva snuck another shot by Rhode Island College netminder Audrey Maia.

Turner halved the Mitchell lead in the 23rd minute when she took a feed from Jaclyn Greenman and found the back of the net with a shot. Turner scored again two minutes later with the assist going to Stephanie Ricci, and the score remained tied at 2-2 heading into halftime.

Turner completed the hat trick in the 56th minute when she found a loose ball and blasted it past Mitchell junior goalkeeper Katie McBride to put the Anchorwomen up for good. Six minutes later, Turner struck again with Greenman picking up her second assist of the game. Elsa Almeida rounded out the scoring by netting her first collegiate goal in the 70th minute off a feed from Turner.

Maia made one save in 14:17 of action while Justina Thoma stopped four in relief. McBride made 15 saves in defeat.

Mitchell will next host Regis College on Saturday, October 11 at 1 p.m.
