Women's Soccer Plays to Draw vs. Lyndon State

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team played host to Lyndon State College on Saturday afternoon and came away with a 1-1 draw in double overtime at Alumni Field.

After a scoreless first half in which play went back and forth, Mitchell took a 1-0 lead on a goal from senior Alexandra Mahar in the 79th minute. Mahar buried a feed from freshman Nicole Bergeron from six yards out to tally her first goal of the season. The assist marked Bergeron's first collegiate point.

The lead didn't last for long as the Hornets went back on the attack and evened the score in the 83rd minute. Jordan Manning settled a loose ball in the 18-yard box and found the back of the net for her first goal of the season. The remainder of regulation was scoreless and the match went into extra time. Each team produced a quality chance in the second overtime period but came up empty thanks to solid goalkeeping.

Lyndon State's Shelby Sheridan was denied in the 103rd minute when Mitchell keeper Katie McBride sprawled out and tipped her shot off the far post. Then in the final minute of the contest, Mahar had a chance at the winner on the other end but was turned away by Hornets goalkeeper Johanna Sargent.

McBride finished with seven saves on the day while Sargent recorded a pair.

Mitchell (1-1-0 overall) will next play at Mount Ida College on Wednesday, September 9 at 7 p.m. Lyndon State returns to action at home against Curry College on Sunday, September 6 at 1 p.m.
