Women's Soccer Plays to Scoreless Tie with Bay Path


NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team played to a 0-0 stalemate against Bay Path University on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Mitchell goalkeeper Katie McBride made seven saves to record her first career shutout. Bay Path keeper Briana Kujawski turned away seven shots to pick up her second clean sheet of the season.

Both sides produced chances in regulation but came up empty. Vannessa Ortiz had a pair of shots go off the crossbar in the first half for the Mariners while Samantha Cilenti got several good looks in the second half. Bay Path's best opportunities came in the second half as Jailinne Ruiz put a shot off the post in the 78th minute and Shannon Mayewski hit the crossbar in the 85th.

In the first overtime period, Cilenti blasted a shot on frame that was denied by Kujawski. In the second extra period, Dallas Jackson had an open look but sailed her shot over the goal. Ruiz put a shot on goal in the 109th minute that was stopped by McBride. 

Mitchell's last chance came in the closing seconds of OT. Tiana Edwards played a long ball through the Bay Path back line, but Kujawski came out of goal to beat Christina Jando to the ball by a fraction of a second to break up the play.

Both teams attempted 19 shots in the contest and placed seven on goal. The Mariners held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Prior to the game, the Mariners honored Cilenti, McBride, Taylor Silva and Alexandra Mahar in a special Senior Day celebration. All four seniors have played four years at Mitchell.

Mitchell (2-7-4 overall, 1-4-2 NECC) will next play at Wheelock College on Wednesday, October 28 at 7 p.m. Bay Path (5-9-1, 2-4-1 NECC) returns to action at home against Southern Vermont College on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
