Late Goal Sinks Women's Soccer at Lyndon State

LYNDON CENTER, Vt. – A late goal by Lyndon State College was enough for a 1-0 victory over Mitchell College on Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action.

Lyndon State's Larissa Gemberling scored in the 78th minute to break a scoreless tie. The Hornets then held on late to secure their second victory of the season.

The Hornets controlled the first half, keeping the ball in the Mitchell end for the majority of the 45 minutes. However, none of Lyndon State's seven shots made it past Mitchell keeper Jordan Lohneiss, who finished with four saves in the stanza.

The Hornets had an opportunity to score with a penalty shot at the 57th minute, but the attempt went wide left.

With less than 15 minutes left in regulation, the Hornets' Kiya DeWitt sent a cross from the right side and connected with Gemberling, who was crashing in front of the net. Gemberling one-touched the ball past Lohneiss for the game's first--and only--goal.

The Hornets had a few scares as the Mariners got two shots off that hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced straight down. The second time it occurred, the Mitchell's Tiana Edwards placed the rebound in the net but the linesman had his flag up signaling offside, nullifying the goal.

Johanna Sargent recorded her second win of the season with four saves for the Hornets. Gemberling collected her second goal of the season. Lohneiss, who made her first career start in goal, finished with seven saves.

Mitchell (0-3-0 overall) will next host Eastern Nazerene College on Wednesday, September 14 at 2:30 p.m.
