Women's Soccer Drops 5-0 Decision to Lesley

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team suffered a 5-0 setback to Lesley University on Wednesday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference action at Alumni Field.

The Lynx (11-4-2 overall, 6-1-0 NECC) controlled the pace from start to finish and picked up their fourth straight win. Cassidy Hopkins led the way with a pair of goals while Jordan Mitchell added a goal and an assist.

The two goals by Hopkins came 58 seconds apart in the opening moments of the contest. The first tally came off a centering pass from Jordan Mitchell in the eighth minute that found Hopkins near the far post for the finish. Less than a minute later she buried a header off a corner kick to make it a 2-0 Lesley lead.

The Lynx continued to use the corner kick to their advantage, scoring twice more before the half on set pieces. Maddy Kelly scored on a shot off a corner that deflected off both Mitchell goalkeeper Jordan Lohneiss and the crossbar before being ruled a goal. Rachel Buckley later converted another successful header off a corner kick from Kai Morehead.

Jordan Mitchell tacked on the final goal in the second half on a shot from the right side that Lohneiss got a piece of but couldn't keep out of the back of the net. The Lynx finished the game with a 46-0 edge in shots and a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Lohneiss limited the damage by making 16 saves for the Mariners, who dropped to 1-12-0 overall (1-6-0 NECC). Lesley keeper Lilly Donovan didn't face a shot en route to the shutout.

Mitchell will next play at Bay Path University on Saturday, October 22 at 2 p.m.
