Women's Soccer Sinks Lyndon State in OT

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season by a 2-1 final over Lyndon State College in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Drew Johndrow scored both goals for the Mariners, including the first game winner of her career just 3:29 into the extra period. Lindsey Fairbank and Taylor Saja also recorded assists on the day as Mitchell improved to 1-1-0 overall.

Lyndon State (0-3-0 overall) struck first when Rose Wilson tallied in the 27th minute for the first goal of her collegiate career. She brought down a service ball near the left post to teammate Michaela Columbia, who then poked it away from a charging defender. Wilson redirected the pass into the left corner of the goal to give the Hornets the 1-0 advantage.

Johndrow and the Mariners answered in the 40th minute to equalize before the break. Fairbank slotted a ball through the Lyndon State back line that found Johndrow in stride for a clean look from two steps inside the box. She placed her shot in the lower-left corner to make it 1-1 heading into intermission.

After the final 45 minutes of regulation failed to yield a goal, the two sides ventured into extra time to decide a winner. In the 94th minute, Fairbank won a ball back from a defender deep in Mitchell's offensive end. She then served the ball into the box and found Saja on the left side, who attempted a shot that hit off a defender. Johndrow tracked down the deflection just inside the top of the box and left-footed a rocket into the top-right corner of the goal for the winner.

Mitchell goalkeeper Jordan Lohneiss made five saves against 16 shots. Victoria McCormack and Johanna Sargent combined to make seven saves against 22 shots for the Hornets.

Mitchell will next play at Eastern Nazarene College on Wednesday, September 13 at 7 p.m. Lyndon State returns to action at home against Pine Manor College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
