Women's Soccer Salvages Draw vs. Newbury

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College and Newbury College played to a 2-2 double-overtime draw on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference women's soccer action at Alumni Field.

The Mariners received two goals from Lindsey Fairbank while the Nighthawks were fueled by a pair from Shannon Walsh. Mitchell goalkeeper Jordan Lohneiss finished with six saves—including one in overtime—while Newbury net minder Noelle Sass made 18.

Newbury took an early lead as Walsh netted her first of the day off a feed from Katie Flake just 3:33 into the contest. However, Fairbank answered with an unassisted effort in the 31st minute to tie the game, and then finished off a pass from Hannah Corrigan in the 41st to give Mitchell a 2-1 lead at the break.

Walsh tied the game at 2-2 in the 80th minute with her team-leading seventh tally of the season, and neither team found the back of the net in the final 10 minutes of regulation. The story was the same in the two 10-minute overtime periods, as the Nighthawks recorded the only shot on goal but came up empty.

Mitchell (1-8-1 overall, 0-4-1 NECC) will next play at Lesley University on Wednesday, October 18 at 8 p.m. Newbury (2-12-1 overall, 1-4-1 NECC) returns to action at Mount Ida College on Tuesday, October 17 at 7 p.m.
