Women's Soccer Blanks Anna Maria for First Win

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team earned its first victory of the season on Monday afternoon, defeating Anna Maria College by a 3-0 final in non-conference action at Alumni Field.

Mitchell (1-5-0 overall) scored all three goals in the first half. Jacquelyn White netted the first two just over two minutes apart, and Yasmine Mai Le tacked on the third midway through the stanza. Goalkeeper Drew Johndrow made five saves to secure her first career shutout.

Rachel Matloff made 17 saves in goal for the AMCATS, who dropped to 0-6-0 overall.

The Mariners wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as White tallied her first of the season in the eighth minute off a feed up the middle of the field from Lindsey Fairbank. White had a one-on-one chance against the keeper and converted to give Mitchell the 1-0 advantage.

Minutes later, White added the second tally on a play that unfolded in a near identical manner. However, this time it was Michaela DeSena who supplied the assist, and White capitalized to record the first multi-goal game of her career.

Later in the half, White had a crack at the hat trick but was denied by Matloff, who made a save at point-blank range to keep the deficit at 2-0.

In the 22nd minute, Lindsey Robinson played a ball from the right sideline to the top of the box for Le, who tracked it down for a clean look against the keeper. She then buried a shot into the back of the net for her first career goal.

The Mariners carried the 3-0 lead into the halftime intermission and had plenty of scoring chances in the second stanza. Matloff made nine saves over the final 45 minutes to keep the game close, including a diving stop in the 73rd minute to deny Fairbank.

Anna Maria's best scoring chance came in the 54th minute when Keannah Dunsmore had a one-on-one chance against Johndrow. The Mitchell keeper charged out to cut off the angle and got a piece of the shot to keep the AMCATS off the scoreboard.

Mitchell held a 33-7 edge in total shots and a 20-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Mitchell will next play at Becker College on Saturday, September 22 at 11 a.m. Anna Maria returns to action at home against Lasell College on Wednesday, September 19 at 7 p.m.
