Strong Second Half Pushes Elms Past Women's Soccer

NEW LONDON, Conn. – A strong second half fueled Elms College to a 5-0 victory over Mitchell College on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference women's soccer action at Alumni Field.

A total of five Elms players found the back of the net in the contest. The Blazers led 1-0 at halftime but struck for four goals over the final 45 minutes to improve to 7-4-1 overall (3-1-0 NECC).

The contest was scoreless until Gigi Thibault scored off a feed from Reilly Jodoin in the 38th minute to put Elms in front before the halftime whistle. The goal was her first of the season.

The Blazers added to the margin with a pair of headers—both off corner kicks—during a 3:17 stretch early in the second stanza. Kelsey Shea finished from right in front of the goal in the 59th minute for her first tally of the season. Sydney Goodwin soon followed with a shot at the far post in the 62nd minute for her fourth goal of year, tying her for the team lead. Both goals were assisted by Haley Richard.

Shannon Denault added a goal in the 74th minute off a well-played ball from Jordan Bailey for her third marker of the season. Sam Manchino completed the scoring with her first goal of the year in the 87th minute courtesy of an assist from Danielle Asklar.

The Blazers held a commanding 35-4 edge in total shots. Elms goalkeeper Rebecca Molin didn't face a shot on goal en route to her third shutout of the season. Mitchell keeper Drew Johndrow made 11 saves against the barrage.

Mitchell (1-9-0 overall, 0-4-0 NECC) will next play at Southern Vermont College on Wednesday, October 10 at 3:30 p.m. Elms returns to action at Newbury College on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
