Southern Vermont Sinks Women's Soccer

BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team dropped a 6-0 decision to Southern Vermont College on Wednesday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference action at Everett Field.

The game was scoreless until the 36th minute of play, and SVC added another late in the first period to go into halftime on top 2-0. The Mountaineers kept up a steady scoring pace through the second stanza and walked out with their third-straight win over the Mariners.

The Mountaineers controlled the pace of play from the opening kickoff and had a handful of good-looking opportunities down in the Mitchell end of the pitch. None of those would amount to anything, however, including a great chance that glanced off the outside of the right post.

The hosts finally broke through in the final 10 minutes of the first half. The Mountaineers eventually got on the end of one of their many crosses into the box when Rileigh Griffiths headed home her second goal of the year off a pass from the left by Kaidin Gauthier in the 36th minute.

Griffiths added her second point of the day with 2:18 left to go in the period as she played the latter of two great balls by SVC. Addison Bonacio sent a pass from her end of the field up the right edge where Griffiths was able to get to it and go through space. Griffiths was part of a 2-on-1 with the MC keeper, and she waited until the perfect time to send a square pass to Molly Madore. Madore was able to easily slot home her second of the year from the left side of the box and make it a 2-0 advantage.

Southern Vermont's Taylor Mallett extended the lead just 5:38 into the second stanza as she met a corner kick in the middle of the box and headed in her fourth of the season. The assist came courtesy of Ashley Blom from the right side.

Maddie Gibney was later assisted by Blom and Madore for her second and third goals of the year, respectively, and Julia LaFiora then potted her first collegiate score when she got to a loose ball that had been knocked away by the Mitchell keeper right in front of the cage.

SVC keeper Taylor Jarosz did not face a single shot while collecting her third shutout and moving to 5-4-1 on the year. Mitchell counterpart Drew Johndrow made seven saves in the loss (1-10).

Both teams are back in action on Saturday with league games as SVC (5-5-2, 3-2 NECC) visits Elms College for a 12 p.m. start while Mitchell (1-10, 0-5 NECC) is at Newbury College for a 5:30 p.m. kickoff.
