Women's Soccer Blanks Fisher for First Win

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team scored an early goal and made the margin stand, earning a 1-0 victory over Fisher College on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Alumni Field.

J'Naya Kelly netted the lone goal for the Mariners, who picked up their first win of the season. The victory was also the first for head coach Marc Davis, who took over the Mitchell program this season.

Mitchell wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Kelly finished off a cross from Lindsey Fairbank just 84 seconds into the contest. Fairbank drove the through the defense on the left side of the goal before slipping a pass across the six-yard box to Kelly at the far post. The Mitchell rookie buried her left-footed shot past Fisher keeper Olivia Handy for her first collegiate goal.

Both sides had chances over the final 88 minutes of the contest but couldn't convert. Handy stopped the final nine shots on goal to keep the Falcons in the game, but Mitchell goalkeeper Yordi Slover was equally up to the task. She finished with six saves while recording her first career clean sheet.

Mitchell (1-2-0 overall) will next host NVU-Lyndon on Saturday, September 14 at 3:30 p.m. Fisher (1-3 overall) returns to action at Eastern Nazarene College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
