NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team made it two wins in a row with a 3-2 overtime victory over Northern Vermont University-Lyndon on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
J'Naya Kelly scored the golden goal in the 96th minute, her second game-winning tally in as many games. Lindsey Fairbank and Madison Nicynski recorded goals for the Mariners, who improved to 2-2-0 overall on the year. Eleanor Harrington netted a pair of goals for the Hornets, who dropped to 0-4-0 overall.
Harrington put Lyndon up 1-0 in the 32nd minute on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. She fired a shot over the Mitchell wall that tucked inside the left post for the only goal of the half.
Mitchell equalized in the opening minutes of the second half as Nicynski served up a free kick into the box that Kelly flicked to the left post. Fairbank came crashing in to poke the ball over the goal line for her first goal of the season.
Nicynski later gave the Mariners the lead with her first tally of the season in the 66th minute. A Lyndon foul yielded a free kick from the left wing from 30 yards out. Nicynski drilled a ball to the far post that just carried over goalkeeper Victoria McCormack for the 2-1 lead.
Harrington added her second goal in dramatic fashion, sending a heel kick over her own head into the box and finishing it off with a volley to even the margin at 2-2. The goal was her team-leading third of the season.
Midway through the extra session, Fairbank served a ball through the back line on the right side of the field. Kelly caught up to the pass and took three touches before launching the winning shot to the far post. McCormack got a piece of the ball, but not enough to keep it out of the back of the net.
Mitchell goalkeeper Yordi Slover finished with eight saves against 16 shots. McCormack made 13 stops against 27 total shots.
Mitchell will next play at Mass Maritime Academy on Wednesday, September 18 at 7 p.m. Lyndon returns to action at Albertus Magnus College on Sunday, September 15 at noon.
