Women's Soccer Falls 1-0 to Albertus Magnus

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team dropped the 2021 season opener by a 1-0 final to Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action.

Emmalee Ianiello netted the game's lone goal in the 77th minute to give the Falcons their first win of the season. Albertus Magnus held a commanding 40-1 advantage in total shots in the contest.

The debut of goalie Gemma Landry was the highlight for the Mariners. She made 18 saves in her first collegiate start and kept Mitchell in the game until the final horn.

Despite the Falcons' best efforts, Landry and the Mariners kept the match scoreless in the first half. Albertus Magnus' best scoring chance came in the 40th minute when Victoria Jainchill busted up the field on a breakaway and had an uncontested look at the goal. However, Landry came out to cut off the angle and slid to deflect the shot. The ensuing rebound was put on goal by Ianiello, but Angelina Munoz had trailed the play and cleared the shot off the goal line.

The Falcons continued the attack in the second half, peppering Landry with shots throughout. They finally broke through when Katherine Raposo centered a ball from the right side of the goalie box that Ianiello re-directed into the left corner.

Michelle Mecca posted a clean sheet for the Falcons and did not face a shot on goal.

Mitchell (0-1-0 overall) will next host Anna Maria College on Saturday, September 4 at 11 a.m.
