Women's Soccer Battles Dean to Scoreless Draw

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College and Dean College played to a scoreless draw in double-overtime on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference women's soccer showdown.

Both goalkeepers picked up their first clean sheets of the season. Mitchell's Gemma Landry recorded 15 saves against 33 total shots while Dean's Haley Gaunt made five stops against 10 shots.

Despite the lack of scoring, both sides had plenty of quality chances. Mitchell's best look in the first half came in the 14th minute when Francesca Zamarripa attempted a shot from just inside the 18-yard box that looked destined to slip inside the left post. However, a diving Gaunt was able to tip the ball wide of the goal and keep the Mariners off the scoreboard.

Following intermission, Dean peppered the Mitchell goal with seven shots in the first 10 minutes of the half, but to no avail. Landry made six saves during the spurt, including a sliding save on a one-on-one, point-blank attempt by Jazzy Sztyler-Magee in the 55th minute.

With 19 minutes remaining in regulation, Gaunt prevented an own goal and quickly started a Dean counterattack. The Bulldogs moved the ball down the field and ended up putting a shot on goal off the foot of Rachael Amatruda, but Landry supplied another diving stop.

With time ticking down, Mitchell made one final push in regulation. Elon Johnson took the ball in the midfield and looped around the left side to the top of the box. She launched a shot with seconds remaining, but Gaunt punched the ball away as time expired.

Dean's Jazlyn Estrella nearly had a golden goal in the first overtime. Her shot from the right side in the 97th minute was blocked by a defender but still hit off the post.

The Bulldogs (0-1-2 overall) produced another great chance in the 103rd minute when Sztyler-Magee had a breakaway down the left side of the field. She took the ball to within 10 yards of the goal but sprayed a right-footed shot past the far post.

Mitchell (2-2-1 overall) will next host Eastern Connecticut State University on Sunday, September 19 at noon.
