Soccer's Unbeaten Streak Snapped by ECSU

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team saw its three-game unbeaten streak come to an end on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 2-0 decision to Eastern Connecticut State University in non-conference action.

The Warriors (3-2-0 overall) picked up both goals in the first half and made the margin stand. Briley Harnois netted the game winner in the 13th minute while Alexie Root added an insurance marker in the 36th. Harnois' goal was her second of the season while Root notched her first.

Goalkeepers Emily Wallace and Sara Honold combined for Eastern's third shutout of the season. Each played a half but neither were challenged, thanks to a defense that kept the Mariners from attempting a shot.

Mitchell keeper Gemma Landry finished with 11 saves against 33 shots. She's recorded double-digit saves in all five of her starts this year.

The Warriors got on the scoreboard early on a left-footed attempt by Harnois from 15 yards out. The play started with a pass from Paula Caro, who slotted the ball to a streaking Harnois at the top of the box. Harnois' first touch put the ball behind the Mitchell back line, and she beat her defender to the spot and sent a rocket over the head of Landry.

Eastern's second goal came with just over nine minutes remaining in the half. Morgan Kelly set things up by dribbling down the right side, avoiding a defender, and launching a cross into the box. The ball took one hop before Root volleyed home a shot from just outside the goalie box into the top-left corner of the goal.

Mitchell (2-3-1 overall) will next host Mount Holyoke College on Tuesday, September 21 at 4 p.m.
