Women's Soccer Falls to Elms

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Elms College on Monday afternoon in non-conference action.

The Blazers got the best of their former NECC rivals, improving to 8-6-2 overall with the victory. The visitors built the lead in the first half on goals by Elaina Vilar, Kelly Malheiro and Lindsey Jeffrey, and goalkeeper Angela Picheo and the defense made the margin stand.

Mitchell goalkeepers Gemma Landry and Angelina Munoz combined to make 14 saves in the contest.

Elms wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Vilar's tally came just 1:40 into the match. Morgan Foucault put a shot on goal from the right side of the box that Landry tipped wide, although the ball hit off the far post and remained in play. Vilar was there to tuck the rebound into the left corner for her fifth goal of the season.

The Blazers made it 2-0 in the 15th minute thanks to some pretty passing up the left sideline. Vilar slipped a pass into the box for Foucault, who then drew the keeper off her line before centering a pass to Malheiro for a wide-open chance. The marker was her fifth of the year.

Elms added its last goal in the final 20 seconds of the half. Caroline Wilcox served up a corner kick that was headed on by Hannah Duggan and shot by Emily Maffuccio. Jeffrey deflected the shot at the last moment and snuck it into the left corner for her first marker of the season.

After making adjustments at the break, Mitchell won more possession time in the second half and put pressure on the Elms defense. The Mariners finished with six shots in the contest and forced Picheo to make a pair of saves.

Mitchell (4-7-1 overall) will open New England Collegiate Conference play at Lesley University on Wednesday, October 20 at 8 p.m.
