Women's Soccer Silences Northern Vermont-Lyndon

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- A late goal by the Mitchell College women's soccer team sent the Mariners past Northern Vermont-Lyndon 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon in their home opener at Alumni Field.

After playing nearly the entire non-conference game to a scoreless draw, Mitchell finally was able to capitalize in the 86th minute when Francesca Zamarripa took the ball near midfield and connected with Andee Schaffran who was streaking down the left sideline.

The freshman took possession, beat her defender, and crossed the ball in front of the net. Fellow freshman Cassandra Roman was there waiting and timed it up perfectly, striking the ball with her right foot and sailing it past the keeper into the right corner of the goal.

The Mariners had been knocking on the door all afternoon, controlling the pace of play while getting off eight shots on goal off in the first half and five in the second half before Roman's goal. Elon Johnson registered a team-high three shots on goal, while Zamarripa, Mariah Travisano, and Taylor Bialowas all saw good scoring opportunities.

Gemma Landry notched a shutout for the Mariners, making seven saves in net for her first victory of the season.

After beginning their season 0-3-1, the Mariners have now won two consecutive games to improve their record to 2-3-1 overall.

Mitchell will look to keep their winning streak alive on Saturday, September 24, when they host John Jay at 1:00 pm. The Bloodhounds tied New Jersey City University on Wednesday, moving their record to 3-2-1 on the year.
