Women's Soccer Comes Up Short Against Old Westbury

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Mitchell College women's soccer team saw their two game winning streak come to an end on Thursday afternoon, falling to SUNY Old Westbury 3-1 in a non-conference game at Alumni Field in New London.

The Mariners jumped ahead early in the first half when Francesca Zamarripa possessed the ball on the opponents end and sent a a pass down the sideline, connecting with a streaking Cassandra Roman. The freshman took control and cut inside towards the box, making her defender miss and setting up a one-on-one with the goal keeper. Roman beat the keeper to the ball, striking with her right foot and finding the back of the net for her third goal of the season.

Mitchell maintained their narrow lead until the final minutes of the first half, when the Panthers took control of a Mariner goal-kick and Mia Almonte ripped a shot into the top right corner from the top of the box, good for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.

The score remained tied well into the second half, and Old Westbury finally took the lead when Alana Wallace fired home a rebound which came off a save by Mitchell's Gemma Landry. Mia Almonte added her second goal of the match in the final minute of regulation, notching her 10th goal from the top right corner of the penalty box.

Mitchell goalie Gemma Landry made eight saves for the home team.

The Mariners (4-5-1) will begin conference play on Saturday, October 8, when they travel to Lesley for a game at 12:00 pm. Meanwhile, Old Westbury plays host to Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday.
