Women’s Soccer Shutout by USJ at Home

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team suffered their second consecutive defeat on Thursday afternoon, falling to the University of Saint Joseph (USJ) in the GNAC showdown by a final of 3-0. The loss was also the first of the season at home for the Mariners, who fell to 0-2-1 in conference play.

After a tightly contested opening half, the Blue Jays were able to take a one goal lead into the intermission, after Alana Picard scored off an assist by Marisa Brough with under a minute remaining on the clock. Picard then notched her second goal of the game in the opening minutes of the second half, before Elizabeth Garlock found the back of the net in the 56th minute, capping the scoring on the day for the visiting squad. Jelly Frigo and Jenna Zup also registered assists in the win for USJ.

Despite surrendering three goals, it was another impressive performance for Mitchell keeper Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME), who made numerous difficult saves while facing 11 shots on net. Landry finished with eight saves, as the Blue Jays outshot Mitchell 20-5, including 11-2 in shots on goal.

The Mariners struggled to break through against the USJ defense, as freshman Haley Jeske (Maricopa, Ariz.) and senior Elon Johnson (Freeport, BHS) were the lone players to tally more than one shot. Jeske, along with fellow first year player Morgan Fontaine (Cheshire, Conn.) were the lone Mitchell players to get off a shot on goal.

USJ goalie Madison Corcoran finished with a clean sheet, making a pair of saves along the way.

The Mariners (2-2-1, 0-2-1 GNAC) will look to bounce back when they continue conference play on the road Saturday afternoon, traveling to face Rivier University. USJ (3-2, 3-0 GNAC) is set to host Simmons University in their next game, as the Blue Jays attempt to stay unbeaten in conference play.
