Women’s Soccer Drops Road Tilt at Rivier

NASHUA, N.H. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback against Rivier University in a GNAC match on Saturday afternoon at Joanne Merrill Field. With the loss, the Mariners drop to 0-3-1 in conference play, having lost three straight games after beginning the season with back to back wins.

The Raiders wasted little time jumping on top, as Jordan Butters found the back of the net just three minutes and 44 seconds into the match on an assist from Samantha Franks. Rivier made it 2-0 when Elisabeth Jacob scored less than 10 minutes later off a feed from Jillian Arigo, and that would be all the scoring the game would see.

Mitchell's defense was able to hold the Raiders scoreless for the remainder of the game, however they struggled to generate much offense and were shutout by the goalkeeping duo of Maya Puma and Bri Nugent. The Mariners best opportunities came in the 14th minute when Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) got off a shot but it was saved by Nugent, in the 31st minute when an Elon Johnson (Freeport, BMS) shot was also saved by Nugent, and early in the second half when Morgan Fontaine (Cheshire, Conn.) had her shot attempt turned back by Puma. Fontaine was able to get off a team-best two shots for Mitchell.

The Raiders outshot the Mariners 18-5, including a 9-3 edge in shots on goal.

Junior keeper Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME) recorded seven saves against nine shots on goal, and did not allow a goal over the final 89 minutes.

The Mariners (2-3-1, 0-3-1 GNAC) will look to get back on track when they return to conference play, hosting Albertus Magnus College on Wednesday, September 20th. Rivier (4-1-0, 4-0-0 GNAC) is back in action with a conference game at home against Elms College on Wednesday, September 20th.
