Second Half Surge Propels JWU Past Women’s Soccer

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After shutting out Johnson & Wales University in the first half on Wednesday afternoon, the Mitchell College women's soccer team came out on the wrong end of a 4-0 decision during a conference tilt at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex. The loss drops the Mariners GNAC record to 0-5-1 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to a perfect 7-0 in the conference.

Facing a Wildcat squad that came in averaging over three goals per game, the Mariners executed an extremely effective defensive game plan throughout the first half, limiting JWU to just four shots on net, all of which were turned away by junior goalkeeper Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME).

The second half saw JWU discover their groove, as they scored four times to pull away from a Mariner team that failed to register a shot. Sophia Warburton broke the scoreless tie with her first goal of the game from the right side in the 58th minute. The freshman then added her second goal off an assist by Katherine Dufour in the 72nd minute of the match. The Wildcats made it 3-0 two minutes later when Emily DeRoehn capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity, and capped the scoring three minutes after that when Trina Capezza found the back of the net on a shot from outside the box.

Landry logged all 90 minutes in net for Mitchell and logged nine saves, the second most she has recorded this season.

The Mariners (2-6-1, 0-6-1 GNAC) will return to action on Saturday, September 30th, with a conference road game against Lasell University at 12:00 pm. The Wildcats (7-1-3, 7-0 GNAC) will look to stay perfect in conference play when they host Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday, September 30th.
