Women’s Soccer Can’t Break Through Against Colby-Sawyer

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Playing in their first home match following a four game road-trip, the Mitchell College women's soccer team were shutout 5-0 by Colby-Sawyer College in GNAC play at Alumni Field.

Junior Bridget O'Connell registered a hat trick for the Chargers, who sent 36 shots at the Mariners, including 18 shots on goal. Sam Bishop and Agata Markuns also found the back of the net for the visiting squad, while Bishop, Lauren McKee, and Hannah Marquis each were credited with an assist.

Colby-Sawyer broke through early when O'Connell recorded her first goal just under 13 minutes into the game. She then made it 2-0 two minutes later, before Sam Bishop put the Mariners in a three goal hole when she scored off a feed by O'Connell in the 34th minute. The score would hold at 3-0 through the intermission and well into the second half, but again it was O'Connell, this time putting one past the Mitchell keeper in the match's 70th minute. Colby-Sawyer then capped the scoring 10 minutes later on a goal by Markuns.

The Chagers defense proved a difficult task for the Mariners, as the home team recorded just one shot, which came off the foot of sophomore Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.), and went wide right at the 62-minute mark.

Mitchell goalkeeper Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME) finished with 12 saves in the loss, marking the third consecutive game she has tallied double-digit saves.

Lyndsey Valletta, Alexis Lebreton, and Rylee Suchnicz shared time in goal for the Chargers and combined to post a clean sheet.

The Mariners (2-9-1, 0-9-1 GNAC) will look to bounce back when they return to play on Wednesday, October 11th, when they visit Anna Maria College for a GNAC battle. The Chargers (8-3-3, 7-2-1 GNAC) play next on Tuesday, October 10th, at Rivier University.
