Women’s Soccer Snaps Skid by Taming AMCATS

PAXTON, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team snapped a nine-game losing skid on Wednesday evening, shutting out Anna Maria College 2-0 in a GNAC matchup at Caparso Field.

Senior captain Elon Johnson (Freeport, BHS) and sophomore Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) each registered goals for the Mariners, with Johnson netting her third of the season and 13th of her career, while Roman tallied her second of the fall.

A defensive struggle early, offensive opportunities were hard to come by in the opening half as the two squads combined for just nine shots and no goals over the first 45 minutes of play. 10 minutes into the second half the deadlock was broken when Mitchell goalkeeper Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME) took possession of the ball in the box and booted it past midfield, connecting on a bounce with a sprinting Cassandra Roman. The sophomore took the pass in stride, beating her nearest defender in a footrace before sending home a shot past the AMCATS goalie, who had come out of the net to defend.

The Mariners tacked on an insurance goal not long after when a foul led to a free kick in the 70th minute. With the ball positioned nearly 40 yards outside the net, Johnson took a running start and sent the ball soaring, tipping it off goalkeeper's outstretched hands for a long-distance score.

The two goals would be all Mitchell would need, as their defense smothered Anna Maria and held them to eight total shots, just three on goal. Landry collected her third win of the season in net for the Mariners, logging all 90 minutes and tallying three saves for her third clean sheet of the fall.

Mitchell freshman Morgan Fontaine (Cheshire, Conn.) was credited with three shots on goal in the win, while Halie Jennings (New London, Conn.) notched two shots of her own.

Riley Michaud got off two shots for the AMCATS, while Madi Mulligan made six saves in the loss.

The Mariners (3-9-1, 1-9-1 GNAC) will look to keep things rolling when they return home to face Norwich University in a Senior Day conference tilt on Saturday, October 14th, at 2:00 pm. The AMCATS (0-11-2, 0-10 GNAC) continue GNAC play on Saturday, October 14th, at Simmons University.
