Women’s Soccer Blanks Norwich on Senior Day, Earn Second Straight Win

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's soccer team collected their second win in as many games on Saturday afternoon, battling through a cold rain to silence Norwich University 3-0 in a GNAC battle at Alumni Field.

Sophomore Cassandra Roman (New London, Conn.) scored what proved to be the only goal the Mariners would need in the 17th minute of play, taking a pass from freshman Morgan Fontaine (Cheshire, Conn.) and slipping it past the Norwich goalkeeper. It would remain a one score game through halftime, before Fontaine decided to get in on the fun, notching her team-leading fifth and six goals of the season in the second half. The first of the day for Fontaine came when she sent home a put-back that originally came off the foot of sophomore Rahel Scully (Kingston, N.H.) in the 52nd minute of the match, before scoring once more, this time unassisted, with just under three minutes remaining.

The Mariners held a 17-14 edge in shot attempts, including an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Mariners also managed three corner kick opportunities, to just one for the visiting Cadets. Fontaine finished with seven total shots, six on goal, two goals, and one assist for five points.

Junior goalkeeper Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME) played all 90 minutes in net for Mitchell, turning away six shots, good for her second consecutive clean sheet.

The Mariners (4-9-1, 2-9-1 GNAC) will look to make it three in a row when they host Saint Joseph's College on Wednesday, Octover 18th, at 3:00 pm. The Cadets (2-8-2, 1-7-2 GNAC) return to play on Sunday, October 15th, when they will resume a match against Emmanuel College, which was suspended back in September due to lightening.
