Landry Claims Major Conference Award, Fontaine Named to All-Rookie Team

WINTHROP, Mass. – Mitchell College junior Gemma Landry (Lewiston, ME) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Goalkeeper of the Year and freshman Morgan Fontaine (Cheshire, Conn.) was named to the GNAC All-Rookie Team, as the conference announced its 2023 Women's Soccer All-Conference Teams and major award winners on Tuesday afternoon. Landry was also one of 11 players to earn All-Conference First Team honors.

Voting was conducted by the league's 16 women's soccer head coaches following the regular season and did not take postseason play into account.

Landry started and played in all 17 games for the Mariners and led the conference with 150 saves, 139 of those in GNAC play. Despite facing over 11 shots per game, Landry finished in the top 20 in the country at the Division III level in total saves, and turned away eight or more shots in nine games. Landry posted a save percentage of .769, averaged 8.82 saves per game, and recorded back to back clean sheets in conference play to earn GNAC Goalkeeper of the Week for the week ending October 15th.

Throughout the season, Landry continued to climb the Mitchell record book and wrapped up the fall with 467 career saves, the most in the Division III era of the program. Her career average 9.94 saves per game is also tops in program history.

Meanwhile, freshman Morgan Fontaine was the driving force behind the Mitchell offense during her debut season in New London. The first year player finished with eight goals and two assists for 18 points. The eight goals and 18 points were both team high figures, and she finished with multiple goals in two games. Fontaine's play remained strong throughout conference play, as she netted five goals on 32 shots on net to go along with a pair of assists. Fontaine finished the fall campaign by scoring four goals across the final four matches, and was top 10 in conference play in total shots, shots on goal, and shots on goal percentage.

In addition, Mitchell senior Isabel Foley (Framingham, Mass.) was named to the GNAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
