Women's Tennis Loses Opener to Lyndon State

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Mitchell College women's tennis team opened the 2009 season with a 7-2 defeat against Lyndon State College on Sunday afternoon at New London High School.

The Mariners (0-1 overall) picked up wins at both number one singles and doubles. Julie Felts earned the lone singles point against LSC's Danielle Jepson. Felts lost the first set 3-6 but bounced back for 6-1 wins in the second and third sets. She also teamed with Erica Fazio to defeat Jepson and Maria Parr in doubles action by an 8-3 final.

Fazio got off to a good start at number two singles, winning the first set 6-2. However, LSC's Rebecca Irwin rallied for 6-0 and 6-3 wins in the final two sets to pull out the victory.

The Hornets (1-2 overall) picked up the final four points in singles play. Parr defeated Ilana Papernik by final scores of 6-1 and 6-0 while Amber Hartman, Margaret George and Kaitlin Cunningham all won their matches by 6-0, 6-0 finals.

Lyndon State also won at both second and third doubles. The teams of Irwin and Hartman and George and Cunningham each earned 8-0 victories.

"In spite of the outcome, I was very proud of our effort today," said Mitchell coach Rick Carmona. "Our freshmen handled themselves great, and Julie Felts played very well and won both of her matches."
