PAXTON, Mass. -- The Anna Maria College women's tennis team battled back after falling behind 4-3 to defeat Mitchell College, 5-4, in a Division III matchup at Wachusett High School on Monday evening.

The #1 doubles match was as evenly matched and hard fought as the entire contest, with freshmen Julie Felts (Carver, Mass.) and Erica Fazio (Waterford, Conn.) capturing a well-earned 8-7 victory on a 7-4 tiebreaker. The duo remained unbeaten at the top doubles position on the season (3-0 overall).

The AMCATS answered right back by taking the next two doubles matches, as the duos of Nicole Hackenson/Mariel Marfongelli and Mary Marciano/Lora Curtis grabbed 8-1 and 8-2 wins, respectively.

Felts (#1) and Fazio (#2) gave the Mariners the lead right back, earning convincing straight-set victories in their singles matches. Junior Ilana Papernik also pulled out a 7-5, 6-3 win at the No. 4 spot to put Mitchell on the verge of victory. It was the first singles win for both Fazio and Papernik on the season.

The AMCATS rallied back by taking three of the final four singles matches, getting straight-set victories from junior Nicole Hackenso, freshman Mary Marciano and Lora Curtis. AMC was trailing 4-3, but Marciano (6-0, 6-1) and Curtis (6-0, 6-0) stepped up and earned decisive victories to give Anna Maria the contest, 5-4.

Mitchell will next host Bay Path College on Tuesday, September 22 at 3:30 p.m.
