Women's Tennis Edged 5-4 at Bay Path

LONGMEADOW, Mass. -- The Mitchell College women's tennis team came up just short at Bay Path College on Tuesday afternoon, falling 5-4 in a New England Collegiate Conference match-up at Grande Meadow Tennis Club.

The Wildcats edged the Mariners in two of three doubles matches to earn the early advantage, and it proved to be the difference as the two sides split the six singles matches.

Mitchell salvaged a lone point in doubles thanks to the play of Jenny Groman and Veyda McVey at the No. 2 spot. The duo defeated Abigail Janneke and Katie Leibowitz by an 8-6 final. The other matches were equally close, as Laura Simmons and Samantha Ryan fell 8-6 at the No. 1 spot while Alexa Litwak and Lehayla Cruz lost 8-7 (7-3) in a tiebreaker.

Simmons continued her strong play in singles and topped Brittany Walsh in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 1 position. The Mariners also picked up wins at No. 4 and No. 6 behind the play of McVey and Dominique Lacroix, respectively.

Mitchell (2-5 overall, 1-4 NECC) will next play at Lesley University on Saturday, October 4 at 2 p.m.
