Simmons Tabbed NECC Rookie of the Week

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Mitchell College freshman Laura Simmons was named New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week for the sport of women's tennis, as announced by the conference on Monday.

Simmons went 2-0 in singles action last week while playing at the top spot for the Mariners. She began the week with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Becker's Jennifer Lord, and then ended with a 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 victory over Regis' Jessie Lord. It marked only the second singles loss of the season for the Regis No. 1 in NECC play.

Simmons earned NECC honors for the first time in her career. She has played in all 10 regular season matches for the Mariners this season and finished 4-4 in NECC play at the top singles spot.

Mitchell (2-8 overall, 1-7 NECC) remains in contention for the fourth and final berth in the 2014 NECC Championship, which will be held on October 18-19. The conference will announce the field later this week following the conclusion of regular season play.
