VOLLEYBALL COMPETES AT BREWER INVITATIONAL AT VASSAR COLLEGE

John Jay 3, Mitchell 0 (30-21, 30-15, 30-24)

Trailing early in Game 1, Mitchell struggled to get their offense firing, except for a 6-0 run to come back to 27-20. The hitting of John Jay proved to be too powerful, however, as they rolled to a victory in 3 straight games. The Bloodhounds attack was lead by junior Sara Altamirano (Bronx, NY/John F. Kennedy) with 9 kills and 7 digs and sophomore Maria Pacino (Bronx, NY/Maria Regina) with 19 assists, while junior Jennifer Gonzalez (Bronx, NY/Jane Addams Vocational) and freshman Andrea Medina (Brentwood, NY/Brentwood) defended the Pequots advances with 8 blocks and 5 digs combined against Mitchell's 20 team kills and 9 service aces.

New Jersey City 3, Mitchell 0 (30-20, 30-28, 30-15)

Despite Mitchell's best efforts, they could not contain the attack of NJCU's Cintron who led all scorers again for the Gothic Knights with 11 kills and an .830 hitting percentage. Junior Nadia DaSilva (Newark, NJ/Science) set Cintron many times, racking up 22 assists total and scored 7 aces. Mitchell's youth and inexperience showed as the Pequots only scored 17 kills throughout the match.

Vassar 3, Mitchell College 0 (30-12, 30-7, 30-16)

Vassar finished their second home tournament of the season with a dominating win over Mitchell, maintaining a perfect home record. Leading the Brewers to victory were All-Tournament selections Ly and Hsiung - 15 assists, hitters, sophomore Katie Newton (Santa Barbara, CA/Santa Barbara) - 12 kills, and junior Shana Volesky (Fergus Falls, MN/Underwood) - 8 kills, and junior Cat Foley (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) serving up 4 aces in the match. Interim Coach Paul Yee was pleased with the victories today and all weekend: "The team worked well to improve."

Mitchell was lead by senior Shana Barnes, once again with 5 service points, 5 digs, 1 block, and 4 kills in the match. "Barnes' presence has been invaluable this weekend, constantly motivating her team and always at the right place at the right time," remarked Coach Niko Paul.

Ramapo 3, Mitchell College 0 (30-23, 30-12, 30-23)

Ramapo began Saturday with another win, beating Mitchell in 3 straight games. Hard-hitting freshman Kaitlin Smith (Westwood, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) pounded 7 kills and 3 aces home to lead the Roadrunner attack. Smith was backed up by the strong defense of junior defensive specialist Christine Simmons (Upper Saddle, NJ/Northern Highlands) with 12 digs and freshman middle hitter Danielle Soong (Elmwood Park, NJ/ Paramus) with 2 blocks.

Mitchell attempted to counter Ramapo's scoring surges behind team leader, senior Shayna Barnes, who had 4 aces, 11 kills, 1 block, and 8 digs in the match. Coach Niko Paul said about Barnes: "She stepped up for Mitchell today playing an all around good match." Theresa Kouris also contributed significantly with 14 kills and 5 service aces. Women's Volleyball returns to action on Tuesday when they host Becker College for a 7:00 PM game.
