Volleyball Swept by Daniel Webster, Southern Vermont


NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team hosted Daniel Webster College and Southern Vermont College in a conference tripleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

Daniel Webster (8-5 overall, 2-0 NECC) defeated Mitchell 3-0 in the day's first match. The Eagles then came from a set down to post a 3-2 victory over Southern Vermont (10-5 overall, 2-1 NECC), which later wrapped up the day with a 3-1 win against the host Mariners (3-10 overall, 0-4 NECC).

Game 1 – Daniel Webster defeated Mitchell, 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-21)

Chelsey Crawford led the Eagles with nine kills while Brier Temple added seven kills and a team-high seven digs as Daniel Webster swept past the Mariners in three sets. Caitlyn DePierro recorded six of the team's 14 service aces and handed out a match-high 22 assists to pace the offense. The Eagles finished with 27 kills for the match against only 12 errors.

Sophomore Akesia Bernard led Mitchell with five kills while senior Jen Bordonaro recorded 15 assists. Sophomore Samantha Alevras-Tarbell led all players with nine digs.

Game 2 –Daniel Webster defeated Southern Vermont , 3-2 (25-19, 20-25, 12-25, 25-10, 15-8)

In the day's closest match, Daniel Webster won the first set to jump out to an early lead. The Eagles got three straight aces from Crawford to close out the set.

Southern Vermont bounced back to win the next two sets. Sarah Golub spurred the Mountaineers on in the third set with three consecutive service aces en route to a convincing 13-point win.

After Daniel Webster returned the favor with a 15-point victory in the fourth set behind 11 team kills, the Eagles took control early in deciding fifth set behind the serve of Samantha Hill. Hill fired off three straight aces to propel Daniel Webster to a 5-1 lead that it would never relinquish. She also provided the finishing touch with the game-winning kill to complete the Eagles' comeback.

Crawford and Emily Travis each finished with double-digit kills for Daniel Webster with 12 and 10, respectively. DePierro contributed a match-high 29 assists and added 14 digs. Crawford also recorded five aces while Hill finished with four.

Ashliy Veliz finished with a match-high 14 kills to lead Southern Vermont. Hershey Canta handed out 21 assists while Joanna Hogue recorded eight aces and a match-high 26 digs.

Game 3 – Southern Vermont College defeated Mitchell College, 3-1 (25-19, 25-12, 24-26, 25-19)

In the day's final contest, Southern Vermont needed four games to dispatch of a pesky Mitchell squad. The Mountaineers finished with 16 service aces and 39 kills as a team. Veliz led the attack with a match-high 17 kills while Canta recorded 25 assists and 10 digs.

Sophomore Shayna Diggs and senior Stephanie McKeon finished with 13 and 10 kills, respectively, to pace the Mitchell offense. Bordonaro handed out 23 assists and added 16 digs while Alevras-Tarbell contributed a match-high 22 digs.
