Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision to Conn College

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team dropped its final home game of the season to Connecticut College by a 3-0 final on Wednesday night at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

Conn College (17-6 overall), which won by scores of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-6, racked up 19 service aces and 32 kills to earn its fourth straight victory. Georgia Naumann finished with a match-high 10 kills and added four service aces to lead the Camels. Katie Ketcham handed out a match-high 21 assists and chipped in with six digs and three aces.

Senior Stephanie McKeon recorded five kills to lead Mitchell (5-15 overall). Classmate Jen Bordonaro added 10 assists while sophomore Samantha Alevras-Tarbell led all players with eight digs.

The Camels won the first five points of the match, but the Mariners quickly answered back by winning the next four and setting the tone for the rest of the set. Neither team led by more than two points until Conn College's Calli Stavola came to the service stripe with her team trailing 17-16. Stavola served for nine straight points—a stretch that featured two aces, along with three kills by Naumann—to bring the Camels to set point at 24-18.

The second set played out similar to the first, with both teams battling back and forth and the lead changing hands multiple times. McKeon led the Mariners with four kills in the set but it wasn't enough. With the score tied at 19-19, Conn College took the lead for good on a Mitchell service error and closed out the set behind five straight service points from Naumann.

After putting up a fight in the first two sets with nothing to show for it, Mitchell broke down in the third set and managed only one kill in 17 attack attempts. Conn College, however, had six players combine for 14 kills in the set. Chelsea Manning finished with four kills in the stanza while Sarah Shankel added three kills and a pair of aces. The Camels closed out the match on an ace by Carly Guiducci, their seventh of the set and 19th of the night.

Mitchell will close out the regular season with a conference doubleheader at Becker College on Saturday, October 30. The Mariners will face Newbury College at 1 p.m. and Becker at 3 p.m.
