Women's Volleyball Splits on Opening Day

 

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team opened the 2011 season on Saturday with a doubleheader split at Pine Manor College.

The Mariners (1-1 overall) opened the day with a 3-0 loss to the host Gators before bouncing back for a 3-0 victory over the College of New Rochelle. Mitchell defeated New Rochelle by scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-17 and lost to Pine Manor by scores of 25-15, 25-21 and 25-23.

Freshman Jaclyn Tempkins led the Mariners with 11 kills and five blocks against New Rochelle. Classmate Emily Stracuzzi chipped in with eight kills while newcomer Nicole Terni and senior Marie Connelly handed out 22 and 11 assists, respectively. Terni also served for a team-high five aces in the match.

Senior Bianca Young paced Mitchell in the opener with nine kills against Pine Manor. Terni and Connelly combined for 25 assists in the match while junior Arianna Thomas finished with a team-high 11 digs.

Mitchell will host Saint Joseph College in its home opener on Wednesday, September 14 at the Yarnall Athletic Center. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
