Volleyball Splits at Albertus Magnus


NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team played a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday at Albertus Magnus College, falling 3-1 to Norwich University before bouncing back to defeat the host Falcons by a 3-2 margin.

Match #1 – Norwich 3, Mitchell 1

The Mariners (3-2 overall) opened the day with a hard-fought loss to Norwich by set scores of 25-12, 27-29, 25-13 and 25-14. Freshmen Jaclyn Tempkins and Alivia Royal and sophomore Gloria Charles each finished with six kills to pace the offense. Freshman Nicole Terni added 13 assists while junior Arianna Thomas and freshman Emily Stracuzzi chipped in with 18 and 13 digs, respectively.

Match #2 – Mitchell 3, Albertus Magnus 2

Mitchell dropped the first set against the Falcons but rebounded to win three of the next four to pull out the victory. The Mariners won by set scores of 17-25, 25-23, 26-24, 21-25 and 15-8.

Royal and freshman Hannah Smith each finished with a season-high 11 kills while Terni recorded season highs in assists (29) and digs (25). Thomas also had a remarkable game with a match-high 37 digs on the defensive end.

Terni was the difference maker in the final set. The Mariners led 7-6 before a kill by Terni created a two-point cushion. She then served for six straight points—including two aces—to take Mitchell to game point at 14-6. Albertus Magnus twice called a time out during the stretch but to no avail. Terni then set up Charles for the final kill to secure the victory for the Mariners.

Mitchell and Albertus Magnus will meet once again on Wednesday, September 21 at the Yarnall Athletic Center. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
