Volleyball Outlasts Saint Joseph in Five Sets


WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team held on and pulled out a five-set win at the University of Saint Joseph on Wednesday night at the O'Connell Center.

The 3-2 victory improved Mitchell's record to 2-4 overall on the season. Freshman Amanda Garcia played a key role in the crucial fifth set, recording three kills on four swings while adding a block. She finished with match highs of 11 kills and five solo blocks on the night.

The Blue Jays got off to a 1-0 lead with a 25-23, first-set win before Mitchell came back with 25-22 and 25-19 wins to go ahead 2-1. Saint Joseph stayed in the match with a 25-18 victory in the fourth, but Mitchell took the decider, 15-11.

The Blue Jays had a balanced offense as Ciara Perez, Emily Vigue and Rebecca DiPinto had nine kills apiece. DiPinto was the most efficient, getting her nine put-aways on just 18 swings and without committing any hitting errors and also served three aces.

Elizabeth Tuazon had a match-high 18 digs for Saint Joseph and Perez added 12.

For Mitchell, junior Nicole Terni had 27 assists and she and senior Arianna Thomas each had 15 digs. Junior Shayna Diggs and sophomore Jaclyn Tempkins also combined for 13 kills in the winning effort.

Mitchell returns to action at home against Mount Saint Vincent College on Saturday, September 15 at 1 p.m.
