Volleyball Powers Past Bay Path


NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College women's volleyball team defeated Bay Path College by a 3-0 final on Tuesday night in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

The win was the third in a row for the Mariners (5-7 overall, 2-0 NECC), who won by set scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-13. Junior Gloria Charles led Mitchell with a career-high 12 kills and added three blocks while sophomore Jaclyn Tempkins finished with seven kills. Junior Nicole Terni added 28 assists and 16 digs while senior Arianna Thomas chipped in with a team-high 24 digs.

Bay Path (6-8 overall, 0-2 NECC) was led by Kate Bartels and Elizabeth Haylette with five kills apiece. Kacie Bayreuther contributed a match-high 25 digs on the defensive side while Ashley Provost added 13 assists.

Mitchell never trailed in the first set after Terni and Thomas served out to a 5-1 advantage. The Mariners increased the margin to as many as eight in the set and coasted to the early 1-0 lead. Charles and freshman Amanda Garcia each finished with three kills in the stanza for Mitchell while Bartels registered a pair for Bay Path.

The trio of Tempkins, Charles and Garcia combined for all 11 of Mitchell's kills in the second set. The Mariners led 15-9 before the Wildcats closed the gap by winning five of the next six points to pull within two at 16-14. Mitchell took a quick timeout to stymie the momentum and regained control by winning the next three points en route to the set victory.

The Mariners blitzed their way to a huge win in the final set. Already leading 13-6, Mitchell won the next eight points on the serve of Terni to open up a 21-6 advantage. Charles led all players with five kills in the set while Tempkins added three, including a rocket on the penultimate point of the match.

Mitchell will next play at Lesley University on Sunday, October 7 at 3:30 p.m.
