Volleyball Picks Up First Win at Sarah Lawrence


BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- The Mitchell College women's volleyball team picked up its first win of the season on Sunday, splitting a doubleheader against Sarah Lawrence College and Brooklyn College.

The Mariners (1-4 overall) bested Sarah Lawrence 3-0 in the opening match before suffering a 3-1 setback to Brooklyn. The win was also the first for head coach Tim Gaiser at Mitchell.

Match #1 -- Mitchell 3, Sarah Lawrence 0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-13)

Senior Gloria Charles finished with a match-high nine kills and added six digs as the Mariners needed only three sets against the Gryphons (1-4 overall). Freshman Amanda Rowan chipped in with a season-high six kills and sophomore Amanda Garcia had five.

The Mariners recorded a season-high 20 service aces in the match, led by eight from freshman Jessica Ware. Ware got Mitchell going in the first set, serving for 11 straight points to turn a two-point deficit into a commanding 17-8 lead.

Mitchell hit .142 as a team and also finished with six total blocks, four of which came from Garcia.

Match #2 -- Brooklyn 3, Mitchell 1 (32-30, 25-17, 20-25, 25-18) 

Mitchell went to a fourth set for the first time all season in a competitive match against Brooklyn (1-3 overall). Charles led all players with 15 kills while Garcia added 13 kills and four blocks. Sophomore Nicole Caminiti handed out 28 assists and finished with a match-high 17 digs.

The Mariners jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first set, but the Bulldogs rallied back for a tremendous finish. Trailing 24-18, Brooklyn won the next six points to tie up the set. The two teams then fought off a combined six set points before the Bulldogs held on for a 32-30 win.

After dropping the second set, Mitchell got off to a 4-0 lead in the third and never trailed. The Mariners then led 3-0 in the fourth before Brooklyn rallied back to take the lead at 11-10. Later on with the set tied at 16-16, the Bulldogs won nine of the final 11 points to seal the victory.

Mitchell will next play its first home match of the season against Albertus Magnus College on Tuesday, September 17 at 7 p.m.
