Volleyball Closes Vermont Trip with Two Wins


JOHNSON, Vt. -- The Mitchell College women's volleyball team closed out its weekend tour of Vermont with a pair of 3-0 victories over Lyndon State College and Johnson State College on Sunday afternoon at Carter Gymnasium.

The Mariners opened the day by edging the Hornets in closely contested sets of 25-21, 25-21 and 25-20. With the loss Lyndon slipped to 7-8 overall.

Senior Barbara Fontes led Mitchell with 14 digs. In addition, sophomore Amanda Garcia posted 13 kills, two aces, and three blocks in the non-conference victory for the Mariners.

Lyndon was paced by Abbey Greene who tallied seven kills, three aces, and one block. Morgan Diltz also chipped in seven kills and two aces in the defeat.

In the second match, the Mariners beat the host Badgers by set scores of 25-16, 25-22 and 25-11. With the loss Johnson slipped to 0-17 on the season while Mitchell improved to 6-11 overall.

Senior Gloria Charles paced the Mariners with 12 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Amanda Rowan also provided nine kills and eight digs in the potent Mariner offensive attack.

For Johnson, Andrea Williams posted four kills, eight digs, and four service aces in the defeat.

Mitchell returns to action on Tuesday, October 15 against Bay Path College at Holyoke Community College.
