Volleyball Edges Bay Path in Five Sets


HOLYOKE, Mass. - The Mitchell College women's volleyball team hung on for a 3-2 victory at Bay Path College on Tuesday night in a New England Collegiate Conference match-up.

The Wildcats took the first game 25-14, while the Mariners fought through the second and third sets of extended play, narrowly winning 30-28 and 29-27. Bay Path bounced back to take the fourth game 25-22, but Mitchell finished off the match with a 15-9 final game.

Leading the way for the Mariners was sophomore Amanda Garcia with 24 kills, nine digs, five block assists and an attack percentage of .206. The only other Mariner swinging in double figures was senior Gloria Charles with 10 kills, and she also added nine digs and four block assists. Senior Barbara Fontes led the Mariners with 14 digs while sophomore Nicole Caminiti handed out 30 assists.

Bay Path's Kate Bartels went out in style in the final home match of her career, tallying a double-double with 23 kills and 19 digs. She also added four service aces.  Kacie Bayreuther was a force to be reckoned with in the back line, concluding the match with match-high 26 digs.

The Wildcats dropped to 3-20 overall and 0-6 in conference play, while Mitchell improved to 7-11 overall and 2-3 in NECC play. The win was the third in a row for the Mariners.

Mitchell will next host Regis College on Saturday, October 19 at 6 p.m.
