Volleyball's Garcia, Charles Garner NECC Accolades

ATTLEBORO, Mass. – A pair of Mitchell College women's volleyball players earned all-conference recognition from the New England Collegiate Conference on Monday.

Sophomore Amanda Garcia was named to the all-conference second team while senior Gloria Charles earned honorable mention status. All awards were determined by a vote of the conference's head coaches.

Garcia, a middle hitter, led the Mariners in both kills and blocks during the regular season. In conference play she ranked third in the NECC in kills (101), fourth in points (112.0) and fifth in total blocks (12), kills per set (3.26) and points per set (3.6).

Charles closed out her collegiate career with a highly productive season, averaging 2.39 kills and 3.29 digs per set in league play. The outside hitter tallied totals of 74 kills and a team-best 102 digs over eight NECC contests and also added 11 total blocks.

Mitchell (9-13 overall) finished 4-4 in the NECC and qualified for the 2013 NECC Championship as the sixth seed. The Mariners lost a hard-fought decision to Newbury College in the first round of the tournament, falling by a 3-2 final.
