Volleyball Falls Short at Newbury

BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Newbury College women's volleyball team handed Mitchell College a 3-0 setback in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action on Wednesday evening.

Newbury's Courtney Banks and Lina Miranda combined to hit .486 from the floor to propel the Nighthawks to their 13th victory of the season. Mitchell freshman Myia Williams led the way for the Mariners with eight kills on 20 attempts and added three total blocks. Junior setter Nicole Caminiti paced the Mitchell offense with 14 assists.

Newbury wasted little time in claiming the first set by a 25-16 final. Banks and Maya Umoren led the way with three kills apiece while Miranda was flawless from the floor, notching two kills on five attempts for an outstanding .400 attack percentage in the opening set.

Banks came alive in the second set, tallying four kills on five attempts with just one miscue while registering one block assist. The Nighthawks also got help from Kataya Sykes, who recorded three kills on three attempts as they took the two-game advantage with a 25-18 victory in the set.

Miranda and Banks sealed the deal in the third set, combining for a .667 attack percentage as they were nearly perfect from the floor (12 kills on 18 attempts) in a commanding 25-13 win. In addition to her set-high seven kills, Miranda also recorded three of her match-high four service aces midway through the set while Heather Parish paved the way with a match-high 27 assists.

Newbury improved to 13-7 overall and 3-1 in conference action while Mitchell dropped to 4-13 overall and 0-3 in the NECC.
